Al Schaffer, who has coached high school basketball for 32 years in Michigan, will become the boys’ basketball coach at Ramona High School, Athletic Director Larry Bringham said.
Schaffer has a career varsity coaching record of 373-251 at three Michigan high schools. In 17 years at Grand Haven High, his teams were 231-151, including an 18-4 record last season.
Schaffer replaces Brad McNamara, who resigned after one season to pursue a teaching credential. Last season Ramona was 11-12 overall and 4-8 in the Avocado League.
Schaffer, who teaches mathematics, said in a telephone interview from Michigan that he has wanted to move to the San Diego area for several years, but was looking for a teaching position that included a coaching opportunity.
