NCAA Baseball Regionals : Fullerton Defeats Tulane; Bruins Beat Hawaii, 12-11

Mike Harkey threw a four-hit shutout to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 4-0 victory over Tulane Friday in a second-round game of the NCAA South II Regional at New Orleans.

The loss ousted Tulane, 44-18, from the double-elimination tournament. The Titans, 43-16, play Louisiana Tech, which beat Southern, 5-2, today in the third round.

Fullerton scored all of its runs in the top of the third inning, when two doubles, two singles and a walk chased Tulane starter Gerald Alexander, 9-2. He was relieved by Ricky Pursell, who pitched 6 shutout innings.

Keith Kaub led off the third with a double to the left-field wall. He moved to third on a ground out and scored the game’s first run on Mark Baca’s single to center.

With two outs in the inning, Andy Mota doubled to left, scoring Baca. Tony Trevino walked and Mike Ross singled to left, bringing in Mota. Ken Garcia singled to right, driving in Trevino.

UCLA 12, Hawaii 11--Scott Cline drove in five runs, two coming on a home run in the first inning, and the Bruins withstood a four-run, ninth-inning rally in the opening game of the West II Regional at Tempe, Ariz.

Trailing 12-3, Hawaii, 44-18, scored four times in the sixth, the key blow a two-run homer by Markus Owens. Robert Muhammad hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning.

UCLA, 38-23-1, was held hitless after Steve Stowell’s RBI single in the fourth inning.
