CSUN’s Gainey Wins Javelin Title
Colleen Gainey of Cal State Northridge and five teammates earned All-America honors Saturday at the NCAA Division II championships at Southeast Missouri State University.
Led by Gainey, who won the javelin with a lifetime best of 159-8, CSUN’s women’s team finished sixth for the second consecutive year, with 47 points. Don Strametz of CSUN was named women’s coach of the year for District 8, which includes the Western states.
CSUN’s men’s team, which finished 32nd last year, scored 20 points and tied for eighth with UC Davis and Northwest Missouri State.
Abilene Christian won the women’s team championship with 166 points and the men’s with 127.
Darcy Arreola of CSUN finished second in the 1,500-meter run with a personal best of 4:16.70, a school record. All-America honors are given to those who finish eighth or better in an event.
