Indy Officials Put Their Names on the Results
The unofficial standings of Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 became official here Monday morning. There were only minor revisions, no position changes and no protests.
Among the revisions, Gary Bettenhausen and Dick Simon, of Capistrano Beach, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively, were each credited with another lap. That gave Bettenhausen 195 and Simon 193.
Derek Daly and A.J. Foyt also were credited with an additional lap each, and Scott Brayton lost two when he was penalized for passing during a caution period. None of those three were running at the finish.
Race winner Al Unser Sr. received $526,762 from a record purse of more than $4.4 million and Fabrizio Barbazza of Italy was named the race’s rookie of the year Monday night during award ceremonies.
