Sports Briefs : 49ers Lose Strength Coach
Mark Paulsen, the strength coach for Cal State Long Beach athletic teams, is leaving to take a similar position at the University of New Mexico. Paulsen will rejoin former 49er football Coach Mike Sheppard, now coach at New Mexico.
Speedsailing Grand Prix
The second U.S. Speedsailing Grand Prix will be Saturday on the waters off Long Beach. The giant multihulls and ultralight maxis will race one another on a 24.1-mile triangular course like the one used for America’s Cup competition. For more information, call (213) 438-5656.
Football Skills Camp
A Youth Football Skills Camp for boys up to 18 years old will be July 6 to 23 at Bellflower High School. The cost is $60 and participants should bring shorts, a shirt, tennis shoes and, if possible, cleats. Camp hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. Over-the-Line Tourney
The sixth annual Southern California Co-ed Team Beach Over-the-Line Tournament will be Sunday at Ocean Boulevard and Bayshore Drive in Belmont Shore. There will be men’s and women’s divisions and the games start at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $27 a team. For more information, call (213) 630-2298.
Rowing Lessons Offered
There are a limited number of openings in the Long Beach Rowing Assn.’s Youth Rowing Program at the Long Beach Marine Stadium. The program is for boys and girls under 19 who have no rowing experience. For more information, call (213) 594-6336.
