The head of the city’s Sanitation Department said today that a spill last weekend at the Venice Pumping Plant, triggered by an electrical storm, dumped 2.4 million gallons of raw sewage into Ballona Creek, more than seven times what was originally reported.

A spokeswoman for the department said the spill is believed to be the largest in the city’s recent history. Initial estimates put the size of the spill at 300,000 gallons of untreated sewage that had gushed into the ocean, said Delwin Biagi, director of the Bureau of Sanitation.
