Joey Kirk, the leading scorer on last year’s Cal State Northridge soccer team, is playing for the U.S. national team that is competing in the President’s Cup tournament in South Korea.

The U.S. team lost its first match to Egypt, 3-1, on Sunday. Tuesday’s match with Argentina was canceled with the score tied, 2-2, because of a first-half stadium riot. The U.S. team tentatively is scheduled to play Hungary on Saturday in Taejon and Thailand in Chongju on Monday.

The same team will represent the U.S. in the World University Games July 3-20 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia.

Cal State Northridge junior left-hander John LaRosa, who was 7-3 this season, has signed with the Philadelphia Phillies after being drafted in the 28th round of the amateur baseball draft last week. LaRosa was assigned to Utica, N.Y., of the New York-Penn Rookie League.

Paul Lift, who played at North Hollywood High and the University of Hawaii, is expected to sign a contract today with the California Angels and report to the team’s Class-A affiliate in Salem, Ore. Lift, 21, signed as a free-agent outfielder.

Darwin Freeman, an All-American who helped Cal State Los Angeles to its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Assn. track championship, has been named to the NCAA Far West All-Academic team. Freeman, a senior sprinter who attended Birmingham High, has a grade-point average of 3.53 in health science.

Gretchen Lohr, who attended North Hollywood High and Valley College, earned All-American honors last week as Cal State L.A. finished 26th in the Division I track finals. Lohr became the first woman from the school to score in an NCAA distance event when she placed sixth with a time of 35:21.53 in the 10,000-meter run.

Dave Blankenship of Reseda held off Bill McLean of Canoga Park to win his fourth Hobby Stock Figure-8 event in last Friday’s action at Saugus Speedway. Claude Mereau of Reseda won the foreign stock 12-lap race.

On Saturday, Rusty Parr of Newhall won the 40-lap Sportsman event, beating Rich DeLong Jr. of Granada Hills. In the street stock event, John Cran of Reseda edged Dale White Jr. of Simi Valley. Ron Alyea of Canyon Country won the 15-lap figure-8 race, beating runner-up Jim Marlewski of Simi Valley.

Saturday’s racing lineup includes NASCAR modified, sportsman and mini-stock events. Qualifying begins at 4 p.m., followed by trophy dashes, heat races, semi-main and feature races.
