Phil Plantier of Poway High School signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox Thursday.

Plantier batted .585 for Poway this season, with eight home runs and 40 RBIs. He had five triples and 14 doubles and stole 19 bases. He also walked 23 times in 88 at-bats and did not strike out once.

In fact, Plantier struck out only twice in his three-year career at Poway.

“The contract was everything I wanted. That’s why I signed,” Plantier said. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play professionally.”

Plantier played the outfield his first two years at Poway but was converted to a third baseman this season.

“He’s head and shoulders ahead of everybody, maturity-wise, on the baseball field,” Poway Coach John Harmon said. “He’s very patient at the plate, and that’s what makes it more amazing about him never striking out. He takes a lot of pitches and hits very well with two strikes.”

Plantier will leave for Elmira of the New York-Penn Class A league on Tuesday.

Plantier had been scheduled to play in this weekend’s North-South High School All-Star series in San Diego, but he is now ineligible.
