Martina Navratilova was quoted as saying she was “afraid to play my best” in losses this season to teen-agers Steffi Graf and Gabriela Sabatini.

“Even losing, I still couldn’t pull myself together and give it all I’ve got. I was scared to find out if they could beat me when I’m playing my best because, if they can, then I’m finished,” Navratilova, who has won five straight Wimbledon titles, was quoted as saying in an interview with the Daily Express of London.
