GOLF : Brothers Zambri and Chang Gun for Title in California High School Championship

Westlake High’s brother act of Mike and Chris Zambri and teammate Jimmy Chang will play in the California state amateur high school championship at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach on Monday.

In qualifying for the event, the Warrior trio finished 2-3-4 in the 36-hole individual competition two weeks ago at the CIF/Southern California Golf Assn. championship. Westlake, which won the team competition at the SCGA event, also won its second straight Southern Section championship earlier this month.

That’s why I’m coach: When Jim Bracken finished in a tie for sixth in the L.A. City golf championship last weekend, he had a couple of reasons to crow.

Not only did the Cal State Northridge golf coach play fairly well, shooting rounds of 69-70-71-75--285, he also managed to defeat seven members of his own team.

“I’m all set. I’ve got serious ammunition for all of next season,” Bracken cracked. “I love to beat these guys.”

CSUN’s Wayne Tyni came closest to matching Bracken, finishing in a tie for ninth (68-72-72-77--289).

Bracken and Tyni led a group of four players from Sepulveda who finished in the top 12. Michael Turner, who shot 71-66-71-69--277, was the winner by two shots. Kevin Eden (70-68-76-71--285) finished in a tie with Bracken.

All’s fair on the fairways: CSUN’s Tony Chieffo , who will be a senior next year, defeated teammate Tyni in a sudden death playoff at Shandin Hills in San Bernardino on Monday, earning the right to advance to the U.S. Publinks championship in Cincinnati next month.

The Shandin Hills tournament was a regional qualifying event, and Tyni and Chieffo had tied for the final position.
