Former UCI Player Wulf Selected as Trabuco Hills Basketball Coach

Rainer Wulf, an assistant basketball coach at University High School and a former UC Irvine player, has been named head basketball coach at Trabuco Hills, Principal Bill Brand said Tuesday.

Wulf becomes the school’s second coach, replacing Butch Taylor, who resigned last month after the school’s first two years. The Mustangs were 18-6 last season and finished second in the Pacific Coast League, earning a berth in the Southern Section 2-A playoffs.

“I’m very excited. It’s a great opportunity for someone like myself who wants to establish a premier program,” said Wulf, who learned of his hiring Monday and practiced with players Tuesday. Among his plans at Trabuco Hills will be youth camps for players as young as third grade.

Wulf, 27, was an All-Southern Section player at Bishop Amat, played for two years at Citrus College and started at UCI from 1980-82. He was an assistant coach at UCI for two years and at University for three.

“I really feel he’s going to bring a commitment to continuing to build a great program. He’s a great role model,” Brand said.

Wulf, who taught history at University, also will teach history at Trabuco Hills.
