Lupe Suarez scored a surprising unanimous decision over Juan LaPorte, the World Boxing Council’s No. 1 contender, in a super-featherweight bout at Las Vegas.
The unranked and relatively unknown Suarez (23-1), of Corpus Christi, Tex., who survived a first-round knockdown, is in line for a shot at the title vacated by Julio Cesar Chavez last month, according to co-promoter Bobby Goodman of Madison Square Garden.
LaPorte (29-8), former WBC featherweight champion, did little after the opening round. His manager, former champion Emile Griffith, was visibly upset with his fighter’s performance as the bout progressed. Griffith slapped LaPorte in the face before the eighth round and screamed at him before the ninth round.
