Dawson Warns Padres Against Starting Show

Andre Dawson warned the San Diego Padres on Thursday not to start pitcher Eric Show when the Chicago Cubs play the Padres later this month.

Dawson was hit in the face by a pitch from Show in the third inning Tuesday and needed 24 stitches. The incident resulted in a brawl and the ejection of seven Cubs.

Meanwhile, reacting to the rash of beanball incidents in both leagues, National League President A. Bartlett Giamatti warned teams in the league that he will take severe measures, including suspensions, against players involved in “acts clearly intended to maim or injure another player.”

Among those acts, Giamatti listed throwing intentionally at a batter’s head and fighting on the field.

Dawson declined to say whether he thought Show hit him intentionally.

“It’s over and done with,” Dawson said. “He made a statement that he would regret it the rest of his life and if I have anything to do with it, I’ll make sure he does.”

Thursday, Show spoke about the incident for the first time since issuing an apology after Tuesday’s game.

“All I know is, I didn’t throw at Andre Dawson,” he said.

Show said he wasn’t even trying to brush Dawson back on the pitch. “I threw a fastball, and it was a little bit up, and then it got away from me, just flat-out got away.”

The Cubs play the Padres in San Diego July 20-22, and Show is tentatively scheduled to pitch the third game of the series.
