CHAPLIN & OSCAR
I enjoyed Jack Mathews’ article on Steve Martin (“His Nose for Comedy Puts Him on the Hit List,” June 30), but he was erroneous in stating that Charles Chaplin had never been nominated for an Academy Award. I agree that their record is a shabby one with regard to awarding Oscars to comedians.
However, Chaplin was nominated for Best Actor in 1927 for “The Circus.” (In fact, he even won a special Academy Award for it.) In addition to his nod for the 1927 film, Chaplin was again nominated in 1940 for “The Great Dictator.”
