ARC Mid-Valley Wins Las Vegas Tournament Title

Shawn Kemp scored 23 points as the American Roundball Corp.’s Mid-Valley team defeated San Francisco, 73-68, to win the Las Vegas Invitational basketball tournament Friday at Nevada Las Vegas.

Don MacLean of Simi Valley High added 14, Chris Mills had 12 and Darrick Martin 10 as Mid-Valley won the tournament for the fifth time in the past 10 years.

Earlier in the day, Mid-Valley defeated Virginia, 90-79, as five players scored in double figures. Mills led the way with 18, followed by Martin with 14 and Doug Meekins and Kemp each with 12. James Moses, formerly of Alemany High and now playing for Serra, scored 11 points.

Alonzo Mourning, Virginia’s 6-10 center who is rated as the top high school prospect in the nation, had 21 points. He scored nine in the fourth quarter, during which Mid-Valley built an 18-point lead.

Mills was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Martin, Meekins and Kemp were named to the 10-man all-tournament team.

Mid-Valley’s overall record this summer is 33-2.
