SOFTBALL : Can the Shredders Go on a Playoff Tear?
Don’t look for Oliver North in left field or Fawn Hall at second base, but the Shredders will field a team in the L.A. City Softball Championships beginning Monday.
It’s equally unlikely that comedian Rodney Dangerfield will manage the “No Respect” team, which will compete along with the Shredders in the single-elimination tournament played at 15 sites throughout the San Fernando Valley.
The Shredders existed before North and Hall gained fame for shredding government documents. The team’s name has taken on a new meaning, however, since the Iran- contra scandal, according to Manager Duke Jackels of Van Nuys. The team based its name on a character named Ted Shred in a surfing movie.
Other teams with unusual monikers in the Department of Recreation and Parks’ tournament include the Garden Weasels, the Rubbles, Guzzlers, Sudden Impact, Poor Excuse and Winning Ugly.
The Valley-based teams advanced to the postseason tournament by placing in the top two in their leagues.
Men and women’s slow-pitch teams and co-ed teams from A, B, C and D divisions will be represented in the 177-team field.
