ON THE TOWN: If you’re looking for a great club bill, stop right here. The Dancing Hoods, House of Freaks and Talkback will all be on hand at the Roxy Wednesday night, playing a benefit for Medical Aid to El Salvador. All proceeds go to the nonprofit humanitarian organization, which has been providing assistance to refugees and earthquake victims. . . .

The one (and only) Tom Waits will make a rare radio appearance Aug. 24 on “SNAP,” Deirdre O’Donoghue’s eclectic pop music show that runs from 10 p.m. to midnight on KCRW-FM. Hope springs eternal that Waits will preview some material from “Frank’s Wild Years,” a new album based on his recent musical of the same name (which he co-wrote with spouse Kathleen Brennan and staged last spring in Chicago). The album is due out at the end of the month from Island Records. . . .

And it was a full house at the Lhasa Club last weekend for the always unpredictable Paines, best known for their sound-track work (they did the themes for “Valley Girl,” “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Reform School Girls,” which featured the immortal “So Young, So Bad, So What”). The two Paine brothers, Bobby and Larson, have been playing around town with a hot new band, featuring (at least temporarily) ex-Stray Cat Brian Setzer. In fact, near the end of the Paines’ set, Setzer was joined by old bandmates Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom for an impromptu Cats reunion. The Paines’ next local pit-stop will be at the Music Machine this Thursday.
