Blast at Mall Leads to Store Evacuations

A homemade bomb exploded behind a Granada Hills shopping center Friday night, prompting police to evacuate several stores as they searched for other bombs, officials said.

The bomb exploded at 9:30 p.m. in a parking lot behind one of the stores in the center at Balboa Boulevard and Devonshire Street, Los Angeles Police Officer Wallace Cook said. No property was damaged, and there were no injuries, he said.

Soon after the bomb exploded, one of the businesses in the center received an anonymous telephone call from a person who said there were several other explosive devices in the shopping center set to go off, police said.

Officers evacuated a supermarket, a restaurant and several other businesses that were open, and also closed off surrounding streets to traffic, Cook said. No other explosive devices were found, he said.

All businesses in the center were open Saturday, police said.
