Heavyweight boxer Mitch Green was stopped Thursday night for a driving violation, then jailed when police discovered (1) drugs in the car and (2) that his license had been suspended 54 times, New York City Police said.
Green, 30, was stopped at 124th Street and Seventh Avenue in Harlem about 9 p.m. because he had a small television set up on his dashboard, according to a police spokesman.
Police found that his driver’s license had been suspended 54 times, and Green was carrying pills and a bag of “angel dust” when arrested, the spokesman said.
He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance as well as driving without a valid license.
Green was unbeaten in five years of professional fighting before he lost to Trevor Berbick in 1985. He lost to Mike Tyson, the current heavyweight champion, in 1986.
