San Diego Roundup : SDSU Women Open Against UCLA

The San Diego State women’s volleyball team opens its season tonight at 7:30 against UCLA in Peterson Gym.

Junior All-American Kris Morton, a 6-foot 4-inch middle blocker, and 5-11 senior middle blocker Angelica Jackson return. Last season’s team, which won its first 23 matches, finished 37-9. Morton led the team in kills (559) and blocks (219).

UCLA is led by junior Ann Boyer, a second-team All-American setter and former Poway High School star. The Bruins won the Pacific 10 Conference championship in 1986.

SDSU football coach Denny Stolz will have a weekly television show this fall on KGTV Channel 10.

“The Denny Stolz Show” will run 30 minutes each week beginning this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. through Nov. 22.

The show will be hosted by Rick Powers. It will include highlights of the previous day’s game, upcoming opponents, interviews and features.

Tracie Ruiz, who won two gold medals in synchronized swimming at the 1984 Olympics, will perform with the U.S. Olympic team Saturday through Monday at Sea World.

SDSU Athletic Director Fred Miller will speak at the San Diego Hall of Champions luncheon Thursday at the hall’s executive board room in Balboa Park. Miller will discuss the state of the athletic department in his 21 months at SDSU and talk about the department’s future.

The Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club will host the final match of the United States Polo Assn. President’s Cup regional competition Sept. 12 and 13. Proceeds will benefit Scripps Memorial Hospital’s Mericos Eye Institute.

Winners in the Sept. 13 final will advance to the National President’s Cup competition to be held in Indio in October.

Cindy Bortz, the 1987 world junior ladies champion, and Caryn Kadavy, the 1987 world senior ladies bronze medalist, will be among the field of nationally and world-ranked skaters featured in the “Summer on Ice” figure skating exhibition Sunday at the Ice Capades Chalet in La Jolla.

This year’s presentation will also feature a group of Special Olympic ice skaters. Part of the proceeds from the event will go to Special Olympics.

Admission to the 7 p.m. presentation is $10. Tickets can be purchased at the Ice Capades Chalet or by calling Erin Lewis at 276-7335.
