Three former Cal State Northridge baseball players have been added to the coaching staff. Dan Penner, an All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. selection last season, was hired as pitching coach. Dan Jones, a reserve first baseman last season, will be the outfield coach. Mark Morton, a utility player for the Matadors in 1981 and ‘82, will be the infield coach.

Gary Vartanian, who lost out to freshman Abo Velasco for the placekicking job at Cal State Northridge, has left the team. Vartanian, a senior, was backup to All-American Mike Doan last season.

Chuck Adams of Pacific Palisades and Richard Bergh of Huntington Beach were winners in the Volvo Tennis/Los Angeles Wild Card Tournament at the Racquet Centre in North Hollywood.

The tournament, which included 252 players, was the toughest in the eight-year history of the event.

Adams and Bergh advanced to the L.A. qualifying tournament this weekend at UCLA.

Jonathan Schwartz, 7, tied for first in the forms division at the 11th Annual Grand National Karate Championships at Cal Poly Pomona.

Schwartz, who lives in Westlake, competed in the 8-11 division in the forms class, which is graded on style and technique. He also tied for third in the showmanship division, open to adults.

Quincy Watts of Taft High has been named the Gatorade California High School Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

As a junior, Watts, 17, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the CIF state championships in Sacramento in June.

His personal bests of 10.30 in the 100 and 20.50 in the 200 were the fastest high school times in the nation this year and qualified him for the 1988 Olympic Trials.
