Valencia Shuts Out Sonora in Its Leasure Time, 24-0

At Valencia High School these days, when they say it’s Leasure time, they’re not talking about relaxing.

They’re talking about a hard-working running back who is keeping Valencia’s tradition as a running school intact.

Keef Leasure, a 5-foot 10-inch, 195-pound fullback, had his second straight 200-plus yard, 3-touchdown performance to lead the Tigers to a 24-0 nonleague victory over Sonora on Friday in front of 2,000 in Bradford Stadium at Placentia.

Leasure rushed for 203 yards in 21 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 32, 6 and 31 yards.

Leasure scored 3 touchdowns and rushed for 254 yards last week in Valencia’s victory over Westminster.

“I felt better as the game got going,” Leasure said Friday night. “When my socks go down (around the ankles) I get more power.”

Said Mike Marrujo, Valencia coach: “He’s a hard worker, and now it’s his turn to share in the tradition of Valencia running backs.”

Marrujo also coached outstanding runners Ray Pallares and Tony Goulet at Valencia the last few years.

But it wasn’t the running game alone that stopped Sonora (0-1-1) Friday night. The Raiders could not mount much offense as Valencia’s defense held them to 44 yards rushing and intercepted two passes.

Valencia (2-0), ranked No. 7 in the Orange County Sportswriters Assn. poll, built a 10-0 halftime lead. Valencia outgained Sonora, 293-163, in total yardage.
