Marina Runner Sets TeWinkle Course Cross-Country Record

Shannon winkelman of marina high school set a three-mile TeWinkle park cross-country course record in 14 minutes 39 seconds to win the boys’ large school individual division of the costa mesa invitational saturday.

Second-place finisher Terrence Mahon of La Habra, who finished in 14:41, also broke the former course record of 15:02. Jimmy Geerlings (15:29) of Newport Harbor was third.

Long Beach Wilson won the large school boys’ team division with 87 points, Newport Harbor was second with 118 and El Toro third with 121.

Shaun Nichols of Katella won the boys’ small-school division individual race in 15:46. Katella took the top three spots and also won the team competition. Fred Resendiz (16:10) was second and Jim Thorton (16:14) third. Katella had 33 points, Tustin was second with 34 and La Mirada third with 87.

Natalie Adam of Huntington Beach ran 18:28 on the same three-mile course to win the girls’ large school division. Kathy Cannon of La Quinta and Sita Jones of La Habra tied for second at 18:38.

Newport Harbor won the girls’ large school division team competition with 69 points, Marina was second with 89 and Huntington Beach was third with 96.

Martha Pinto of Katella won the girls’ small school division in 18:43.
