Corona del Mar Finishes 4th in Cross-Country at Stanford

Juniors Eddie Lavelle and Greg Shryock and senior Jim Robbins led Corona del Mar High School to a fourth-place finish in the boys’ large-school division of the Stanford Invitational cross-country meet Monday at Palo Alto.

Lavelle, who placed fifth out of 170 runners, finished the rolling, 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes. Shryock was ninth (16:18), followed by Robbins (15th, 16:37), Hunter Pierce (54th, 17:28) and Paul Scott (74th, 17:48).

Arroyo won the 23-school race with 48 points. Bend (Ore.) was second with 114 points, and San Jose Bellarmane, the defending Northern California champion, was third at 144.

In the collegiate division:

Seniors Richard Graves (fourth, 31:30) and Gus Quinonez (sixth, 31:42) led the UC Irvine men’s cross-country team to a first-place finish in the college division of the invitational Saturday.

The Anteaters, who scored 84 points on the 10,000-meter course, were helped by Greg Houlgate (20th, 32:18), freshman Aaron Mascorro (26th, 32:30), Scott LaForce (28th, 32:43) and Pete Vicencio (47th, 33:05).

Buffy Rabbitt (sixth, 17:31) led the Irvine women to a fifth-place finish with 141 points.
