Roundup : Something New for Sweetwater: a Shutout Loss

Share

Sweetwater suffered its first shutout loss in 10 years under Coach Gene Alim Friday night, a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Point Loma.

What’s more, Sweetwater had never lost two regular-season games in a row under Alim.

The Point Loma defense, which Coach Benny Edens calls “the Dirty Dogs,” shut down Sweetwater, and the Pointers hung on to win at Sweetwater stadium.

Of his defense, Edens said: “They played super. They pursued relentlessly. The defensive coaches, Dave Schuler and David Aros, looked at the films and saw some things. It wasn’t Alim or Sweetwater. It was our defense playing so hard.”

Sweetwater was playing without Pierre Jones, the No. 2 running back in San Diego County, who did not play most of the game because of a back injury. Without Jones, the Sweetwater offense could not get within the Point Loma 30. Point Loma held Sweetwater to 60 yards rushing in 16 carries.

Point Loma had good field position all night but could not score until the 11:20 mark of the fourth quarter. T.J. Linardi kicked a 21-yard field goal to make it 3-0.

Quarterback Mike Benett threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Lewis Guillory later in the quarter for the final margin.
