ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Sunset League : Fountain Valley Rolls Past Ocean View

Share

It might be premature to say that Fountain Valley High School’s football team is on a roll, but in the Sunset League, even a two-game winning streak looks impressive.

“It feels real good after the preseason we had,” Coach Mike Milner said after the Barons overcame a slow start to dominate Ocean View, 21-7, in the league opener for both teams Friday night at Westminster High.

Derek Tuescher ran for two touchdowns and David Henigan passed for 172 yards and one touchdown as Fountain Valley (2-4, 1-0) finally got its offense rolling. The Barons had been held to one touchdown or fewer in each of their nonleague outings.

“Next week will be the big test for us,” Milner said, referring to the meeting with league favorite Huntington Beach. “We’ll see how good a football team we are next week.”

Huntington Beach (4-2, 1-0), a 20-3 winner over Westminster Friday night, is the only team in the Sunset League with a winning record.

Ocean View (2-4, 0-1) looked like a Sunset League powerhouse for a while, pushing the Barons around in the first quarter. The Seahawks--aided greatly by Tom Wind’s 72-yard return of the opening kickoff--breezed to the game’s first touchdown when John Beaubein scored on a 5-yard run at the 9:07 mark. Forcing Fountain Valley to punt after three plays, Ocean View followed that with a 13-play drive that ended in a missed field goal attempt.

From that point on, it was all Fountain Valley. Henigan engineered a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive capped by Tuescher’s 10-yard run three minutes into the second quarter. Late in the period, Henigan advanced the Barons 31 yards on two pass plays to set up Tuescher’s five-yard scoring run.

The Barons’ junior quarterback capped off the night by hitting Courtney Dubar on a 25-yard scoring pass play early in the fourth period.
