HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Esparza Makes Most of Run in the Rain

Mike Esparza of Newbury Park cruised to an impressive victory in a Marmonte League cross-country dual meet against Thousand Oaks on Thursday at Peppertree Park in Newbury Park.

Although he fell at the two-mile mark in a steady rain, Esparza was timed in 15 minutes, 11 11 seconds over the three-mile course, six seconds shy of the course record.

Despite Esparza’s performance, Thousand Oaks (5-1) defeated Newbury Park, 23-38. Newbury Park is 4-2.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. Newbury Park, 15-8, 15-7, 15-13--Thousand Oaks clinched its second consecutive Marmonte League title with the win at Thousand Oaks. Julie Chellevold led the Lancers (14-1, 11-0) with 11 kills.

Royal d. Simi Valley, 15-1, 15-10, 15-8--Suzi Koonter had 14 kills and six blocks for Royal (9-3, 8-2 in league) in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.

Campbell Hall d. Providence, 15-9, 15-4, 16-14--Campbell Hall (14-0, 11-0) remained undefeated with a Delphic League win at Campbell Hall.

Agoura d. Santa Clara, 15-3, 15-10, 15-7--Agoura (10-2, 6-0) remained in first place in the Frontier League with a decisive win at Santa Clara.

Cleveland d. Poly, 15-13, 15-4--Nancy Nicholls had 13 kills and seven service aces as Cleveland (6-1) dominated the Valley 3-A match at Poly (2-5).

Chaminade d. Notre Dame, 16-14, 15-5, 15-9. Anna Suarez had 10 kills and three blocks to lead Chaminade (9-3, 6-2) in a San Fernando Valley League match.

L. A. Baptist d. Western Christian, 15-3, 15-3, 15-5--Michelle Christiansen led L .A. Baptist (10-2, 6-2 in league) with six kills in an Alpha League match.

WATER POLO

Harvard 15, Calabasas 5--Goaltender Kevin Newman had 15 saves and a goal to keep Harvard unbeaten in Frontier League matches.
