One-time heavyweight contender Joe Bugner, fighting in a British ring for the first time in 4 1/2 years, was stopped by Frank Bruno in the eighth round of their scheduled 12-round bout in London. Bugner, 37, announced his retirement after the fight.

Bugner, who went the distance twice with Muhammad Ali and once with Joe Frazier in his 20-year career, came into the fight weighing 256 1/2 pounds, 26 1/2 pounds more than Bruno, who won for the 32nd time in 34 fights.

Bugner, who left Britain four years ago when faced with a two-month jail sentence and a $23,000 child-support claim from his former wife, wore the colors of Australia, his adopted country.
