Share

Southwestern College, trying to end a three-game losing streak, has another shot at a Mission Conference football leader Saturday.

Southwestern travels to Costa Mesa for a 7:30 p.m. game against Orange Coast, which is tied for first with Saddleback.

Last Saturday, Southwestern had a chance to stop the streak at two, but Saddleback’s J.B. Hollis kicked a 31-yard field goal with eight seconds left to give Saddleback a 47-45 victory.

The game also will bring together high school teammates Darrell Crain of Southwestern and Bart Recktenwald of OCC. They played together at La Quinta High School in Westminster in 1985.

Recktenwald leads the conference in rushing with 908 yards in 158 carries, and Crain is fourth with 513 yards in 80 carries.

San Diego Mesa quarterback Jeff Sturch, from Claremont High School, became the all-time conference leader in passing yardage in Mesa’s 49-35 loss to OCC last Saturday. Sturch has thrown for 4,097 yards in 16 games during the last two seasons and surpassed Brad Platt of Southwestern, who threw for 4,028 yards from 1985-86.

Mesa plays at Riverside, the defending conference champion, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
