NOTEBOOK : Lennon and Valdivia to Emcee Induction of Boxing Greats Into the Hall of Fame

Jimmy Lennon and Danny Valdivia have a lot in common. Both grew up in Venice and attended St. Mark’s Catholic Church and each has been honored as a Venice High School alumnus of the year.

Both were introduced to boxing at the old Ocean Park Arena and went on to become boxing announcers, though Valdivia was a late-comer to the ring compared to Lennon, a veteran of matches at Olympic Auditorium. Valdivia has worked for a Santa Monica department store for many years and became a ring announcer in 1982. But when the Police Athletic League honored Lennon as the voice of professional boxing in 1983, the league also named Valdivia the voice of amateur boxing.

The two also shared announcing duties that year at the world amateur championships at the Sports Arena, Lennon in English and Valdivia in Spanish. They will share the dais as masters of ceremony at the World Boxing Hall of Fame dinner Nov. 7 at the Airport-Marriott hotel.

Charlie Casas, president of the Hall of Fame, said boxing promoter Don Fraser will be honored at the dinner and that former boxing greats who will be inducted into the hall include Jimmy Carter, Joe Brown, Danny (Little Red) Lopez, Jack Sharkey, Young Corbett III and Charley Burley. Peru’s junior national fencing team is on its first tour of the United States and will train for a few days at the Westside Fencing Center in Culver City.

As part of their tour, the young men and women team members will take part in a competition at 10 a.m. Saturday at the center, 8735 Washington Blvd. They will also compete in a men’s and women’s foil contest at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Los Angeles City College men’s gymnasium. Both events are public.

It’s not really news when Faye Greenes wins the championship of the Penmar Women’s Golf Club; she seems to win it every year. But it was news this year because she was said to have “recaptured” the title.

Greenes shot a gross of 171 for 36 holes to win the first flight. Gloria Brown was second with 176, Betty Sargent third with 179 and Helen Reagin fourth with 183.

In the second flight, Angie McGarvin won with 193, Elma Ferguson was second with 196 and Agnes Weston third with 200.

Windward School’s annual bike-a-thon from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles, a school fund-raiser, was rained out last week and has been rescheduled for Nov. 14-15. Nov. 6 is the deadline for bicyclists, who solicit pledges from sponsors, to enter. Call 391-7127.
