Titleholder Gary Kasparov and challenger Anatoly Karpov agreed to a draw Saturday in the seventh game of the world chess championship after a marathon 79-move struggle.

The game, which lasted 8 1/2 hours over two days, was ended at Karpov’s suggestion.

The draw leaves the score 4 to 3 in Karpov’s favor.

The first player to score 12 1/2 points or achieve six victories wins the 24-game series. A win scores one point and a draw a half-point. In the event of a 12-12 tie, Kasparov will retain his title.

The eighth game is scheduled for Monday with Kasparov playing white.
