2 Small Quakes Hit Overnight

Two small earthquakes, one an aftershock of last month’s big Whittier Narrows temblor, rattled areas of Southern California early today, a Caltech spokeswoman said.

The 1:27 a.m. aftershock measured 3.0 on the Richter scale and was centered nine miles south-southeast of Pasadena, the same area as the 5.9 main shock on Oct. 1 that caused extensive damage in Whittier, said Jacquelyn Dreher at Caltech. At 4:59 a.m. a quake measuring 3.1 occurred near Devore, about 45 miles east of Pasadena and 12 miles northwest of San Bernardino, she said. The fault on which that quake occurred was not immediately determined. Neither the Whittier Police Department nor the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department received any reports of damage or injury from the quakes.
