Century League : Villa Park Runs Through Canyon, 14-6

Villa Park High School looked sluggish Friday night but managed to hold off Canyon, 14-6, in a Century League game at Orange’s Fred Kelly Stadium.

Villa Park (7-3, 4-1) will enter the Southern Conference Playoffs next week as the league’s second-seeded team. Canyon ends the season 2-7-1 and 0-4-1.

John Genova, a senior running back, scored 2 touchdowns and rushed for 139 yards in 15 carries to lead Villa Park. Genova finished the regular season with 849 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns. The Spartans’ John Chorbagian gained 193 yards in 21 carries.

Canyon threatened to score with 4:30 left, but running back Eddie Washington was stopped on fourth down at the Spartan 1. Villa Park took possession and ran out the clock.

Villa Park totaled 386 yards rushing (418 total yards) and limited Canyon to 242 yards.

Canyon’s score came on a 10-yard pass from Joey Furukawa to Dave Lara with 17 seconds left in the first half.
