City San Fernando 8, Kennedy 7--San Fernando scored its only touchdown with 5:46 remaining on a 10-yard pass from Joe Mauldin to Danny Leos to make the score 7-6. Mauldin scrambled out of the pocket on the 2-point extra point try and again found Leos, this time in the corner of the end zone, for the winning points. Kennedy scored on a 69-yard, 11-play opening-game drive. Mauldin completed 9 of 16 for 175 yards. Sam Williams had 5 receptions for 134 yards and also had an interception. Hardy was held to just 51 yards in 20 carries. San Fernando, The Times’ No. 6-ranked team, is 2-1-1 in league and 6-1-1 overall. Kennedy is 0-2-1, 1-5.

Dorsey 11, Crenshaw 7--The Dons scored all their points in the third quarter to overcome a 7-0 Cougar lead in the Pacific League game at Crenshaw. Quarterback Roman Foster threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Saadite Green and Desi Wells ran for a two-point conversion to make the score 8-7. Later in the period, Kevin Copeland kicked a 37-yard field goal. Dorsey, 5-3 overall, is 2-2 in league and tied for second with Banning, Gardena and Crenshaw. Crenshaw is 3-5 overall.

Lincoln 29, Verdugo Hills 0--Quarterbacks Gabriel Cotero and Tommy Cortez were instrumental in the Tigers’ Northern League win at Lincoln. Cotero completed 6 of 7 passes for 58 yards and 1 touchdown, and scored on a 15-yard bootleg. Cortez completed 4 of 12 passes for 80 yards and 1 touchdown. Gilbert Betancourt was the leading rusher for Lincoln with 74 yards in 14 carries. Joel Ortiz added 54 yards in 12 carries. On defense, Lincoln, which recorded its first shutout of the year, was led by Jesus Padilla, who had 7 tackles and 3 assists.

Reseda 13, University 12--University had the ball and a six-point lead with four seconds remaining and only needed to run out the clock, but quarterback Chris Perry was tackled by Reseda’s Chris Vargas, who caused Perry to fumble. Reseda’s Henry Ray picked up the loose ball and scored to tie the game, 12-12. George Konstantinipoluos’ extra point kept Reseda undefeated at 7-0. Reseda, The Times’ No. 7-ranked team is 4-0 in Pac-8 League play. University is 4-2, 5-3.

Gardena 35, Fremont 6--Derrick Duren scored three times and Vincent Murray twice at Fremont as the Mohicans defeated the Pathfinders to move into a four-way tie for second with Dorsey, Banning and Crenshaw in the Pacific League. Gardena is 5-3 overall. Fremont is 0-4, 1-6-1.

Southern Section Beverly Hills 42, Culver City 16--Quarterback Jason Goldberg completed 12 of 28 passes for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Normans to the easy Ocean League victory over the winless Centaurs at Beverly Hills. One of Goldberg’s scoring passes was a 45-yard reception by Brad Ammann. Willie Crawford rushed for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns in 24 carries for Beverly Hills, 4-1 in league, 8-2 overall. Crawford has rushed for 1,245 yards in 192 carries and scored 18 touchdowns.

El Rancho 12, Bell Gardens 7--Paul Ulibarri completed a 7-yard pass to Jeff Blanco with two minutes remaining to give the visiting Dons sole possession of second place in the Whitmont League. The winning touchdown was set up when Oscar Rodriguez intercepted an Albert Cabral pass at the 50 and returned it to the Bell Gardens 20. Gerardo Erazo scored the Dons’ first touchdown on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, but Bell Gardens blocked the extra-point attempt. The Lancers took a 7-6 lead on a 1-yard run by Joe Munoz and Gustavo Garcia’s extra point. El Rancho is 6-1 in league and 9-1 overall. Bell Gardens is 5-2, 7-3.

Montebello 28, Pioneer 6--Adam Avina and Johnny Macias both rushed for two touchdowns as the unbeaten Oilers wrapped up the Whitmont League title. Montebello (7-0, 10-0) actually had to come from behind, as Pioneer took a a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Pioneer is 2-5, 4-6.

Northview 55, Covina 0--Sophomore Marcus Green carried 13 times for 176 yards and touchdowns of 80 and 1 yards in the Valle Vista League game at Covina District Stadium. Mike Galindo gained 101 yards in 10 carries and scored on runs 9, 15 and 8 yards. Bill Gallis completed 11 of 16 for 91 yards and touchdowns of 5 and 15 yards. The Vikings had 435 yards rushing and 91 yards passing. Northview, ranked No. 7 in the Eastern Conference, is 7-0 in league and 8-1-1 overall.

Canyon Country Canyon 14, Palmdale 13--Defensive tackle Tom Curran blocked Eric Stanford’s extra- point attempt with with 5:35 remaining to give Canyon its fifth Golden League title in the last six years. Palmdale had pulled to within one point on quarterback Shannon Culver’s 1-yard bootleg for a touchdown. Canyon opened a 14-0 halftime lead on Chris Peery’s 1-yard run and Rod Baltau’s 2-yard run. Canyon is 5-0 in league and 8-2. Palmdale is 4-1, 8-2.

Antelope Valley 28, Saugus 6--Antelope quarterback Ron Whipple completed 13 of 22 passes for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Golden League game at Antelope Valley. In nine games, Whipple has passed for 1,683 yards on 111 of 178 completions and 17 touchdowns. Duane Lewis had 8 catches for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns for Antelope Valley. Saugus’ Lamark Allen, who entered the game with 855 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns, was held to just 43 yards in 17 carries. Antelope Valley clinched third place in the Golden League with a 3-2 record and is 7-3 overall. Suagus is 1-4, 4-6.

Los Altos 17, Rowland 16--Quarterback Dave Olson threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Blake Hayward with 22 seconds left, enabling the Conquerors to complete Sierra League play with a 5-0 record. Rowland needed a victory to finish second behind Los Altos and gain a playoff berth, but finished 2-3. There was 1:35 remaining at Rowland when Los Altos (9-1) began the winning drive on its 23 after being penalized 15 yards. Olson kept the drive alive by completing two clutch first down passes to Larry Verdugo for 55 yards. Los Altos is 9-1 overall; Rowland, 2-8.

Hawthorne 45, Santa Monica 20--Viking running back Glyn Milburn, the leading rusher in the state, had another productive game, gaining 240 yards in 43 carries and scoring three touchdowns on runs of 10, 7 and 1 yards in the Ocean League game at Hawthorne. He has rushed for 2,222 yards in 266 carries and scored 34 touchdowns. Unfortunately for Milburn and Santa Monica, his performance wasn’t enough to clinch the league title. Junior quarterback Curtis Conway carried 11 times for 113 yards and scored 5 touchdowns on runs of 1, 1, 3, 9 and 51 yards, and completed 11 of 13 passes for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns to give Hawthorne the win and created a three-way tie for first with Santa Monica and Beverly Hills at 4-1. Santa Monica (8-1) beat Beverly Hills and Hawthorne (8-1-1) lost to Beverly Hills. Hawthorne will enter the playoffs as the league’s No. 1 team based on point differential. Beverly Hills is second and Santa Monica third.
