A Case Is Made on Behalf of Big Ten
The “premature” bowl tie-ups are, in their way, as ludicrous as the weekly wire service polls. This season, Lou Holtz has brought Notre Dame back to a position where the Irish could challenge either Oklahoma or Nebraska for the national title in the Orange Bowl, should they defeat Miami of Florida on Nov. 28.
Notre Dame, which has played the toughest schedule in the country has been frozen out, however, by Jimmy Johnson and Miami who wanted their bowl match-up with the Big Eight champion made prior to their game with the Irish. Once again, justice has been thwarted through politics.
Let the record speak loud and clear. While the Irish have soundly thrashed Big Ten Rose Bowl representative Michigan State, Michigan, USC and Alabama, Miami of Florida has been blowing out the likes of Cincinnati, East Carolina, Miami of Ohio and Virginia Tech. Next up for the Hurricanes is mighty Toledo, while the Irish play Penn State.
Case closed.
