Burroughs 35, Pius X 10--Quarterback Jeff Barrett threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Indians in the first-round playoff game. In next week’s second round, Burroughs plays La Canada, a 13-7 winner over Santa Maria on Friday.
Burroughs (10-1) pulled ahead, 14-0, in the first quarter on two successful trick plays. The Indians scored on their first play from scrimmage when wide receiver Kevin Strasser took a handoff from Barrett and threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Bruce Luizzi.
Jim Gurnea then recovered an onside kick for Burroughs at the Pius X 30-yard line. Four plays later, fullback Wes Bender scored on a one-yard run to give the Indians a two-touchdown lead.
Pius X scored on a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Oliva to wide receiver Michael Burnett to cut Burroughs’ lead to 14-7 late in the first quarter. With 12 seconds remaining in the half, Pius X added a field goal to close the gap to 14-10 at halftime.
The Indians added three second-half touchdowns and shut down the Pius X offense to secure the win. Burroughs stopped Pius X from converting on fourth down three times.
Burroughs overcame 155 yards in penalties. The Indians gained 236 yards passing and 137 yards rushing.
Pius X (6-5) had 112 yards passing and 90 yards rushing.
