College Basketball Roundup : Arizona Beats No. 3 Syracuse

Sean Elliott scored 8 of his 16 points in the last eight minutes and ninth-ranked Arizona knocked off No. 3 Syracuse, 80-69, Monday night in the championship game of the 10th Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.

Elliott, named the tournament’s outstanding player, came alive after the Wildcats (3-0) blew a 12-point lead.

The Orangemen (2-2) trailed, 58-46, with 11:18 left, but took a 61-60 lead at 6:21 on Derrick Coleman’s dunk after a rebound.

Anthony Cook’s basket put Arizona ahead, 62-61, and started a 9-0 run by the Wildcats. Ken Lofton dunked after a steal and hit a three-pointer from the corner. Tom Tolbert’s jumper at 3:48 made it 69-61, and the Orangemen couldn’t recover.

Craig McMillan finished with 15 points, including four three-pointers, for Arizona. Cook had 13 and Tolbert added 11. Rony Seikaly scored 19 for the Orangemen, Sherman Douglas had 18 and Coleman added 15.

Slippery Rock 89, Navy 81--Myron Brown scored 26 points, including four in overtime, and the Rockets surprised the Midshipmen at Annapolis, Md.

The Rockets (3-1) hit 8 of 10 free throws while outscoring the Midshipmen, 14-6, in overtime. Freshman Joe Gottschalk scored 20 points for Navy (0-1).

Siena 72, Wake Forest 67--Rick Williams scored 17 points and freshman Marc Brown added 12 points and 6 assists as the Indians upset the Demon Deacons at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Siena (1-1) led by 20 points twice in the second half, but the Deacons (0-1) trimmed the deficit to 68-65 with 16 seconds left on the shooting of Sam Ivy, who had 23 points. Siena hit four free throws to seal the victory.

Purdue 68, Illinois State 61--Melvin McCants and Everette Stephens sank crucial jumpers in the final three minutes and the 11th-ranked Boilermakers got past the Redbirds at Normal, Ill.

Jeff Harris had 20 points for Illinois State (0-1). Stephens had 12 points and McCants added 11 for Purdue (2-1).

Duke 94, East Carolina 45--Kevin Strickland and Greg Koubek scored 14 points each and the No. 13 Blue Devils rolled past the Pirates at Durham, N.C.

Guard Joe Cook scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half for Duke (2-0). Reed Lose scored 11 points for East Carolina (1-1).

North Carolina State 108, Vermont 58--Chucky Brown had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Wolfpack past the Catamounts in their opener at Raleigh, N.C.

Minnesota 84, Western Illinois 52--Melvin Newbern scored 15 points and Richard Coffey added 13 at Minneapolis and the Gophers snapped a 17-game losing streak.
