THE PREPS : Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Brian Kenney Has 33 as Servite Defeats St. Monica, 79-69

Brian Kenney scored a career-high 33 points to lead Servite High School to a 79-69 victory over St. Monica Tuesday night in the season opener at Servite.

Kenney, a senior guard, made 10 of 17 shots from the field and 13 of 15 free throws. Nick Marusich had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Friars (1-0). Jason Joe scored 31 points for St. Monica (0-1).

Servite took a 28-20 after the first quarter and led, 47-36, at halftime.

In the Cerritos-Gahr tournament:

Sunny Hills 77, Banning 49--The Lancers had four players in double figures, with Brian McCloskey leading the way with 20 points. Sunny Hills outscored Banning, 29-10, in the third quarter to turn the game into a rout. Chris Drakos added 12 points, Jeff White 11 and Walter Mitter 10 for Sunny Hills.

In the Laguna Beach tournament:

Corona del Mar 74, San Clemente 38--The Sea Kings jumped in front, 16-4, in the first quarter and were never threatened. Geoff Probst had 15 points, 6 assists and 4 steals to lead Corona del Mar. Matt Harrington added 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Mike Peters scored 15 points for the Tritons.

Warren 78, Dana Hills 59--After taking a 14-11 first-quarter lead, Warren made 17 of 22 field goals during the second and third quarters, outscoring the Dolphins, 44-27. Center John Lloyd made 13 of 15 free throws and scored 17 points for Dana Hills (0-1).

Santa Ana Valley 67, Compton 66--Roshawn Lacy had 26 points to lead the Falcons (1-0). Brett Beale added 13 and Jason Vaughn 12 for Santa Ana Valley.

Tustin 76, Laguna Beach 50--Leo Parker had 24 points to lead the Tillers. Dane Blanton scored 15 points for Laguna Beach.

In the Valencia tournament:

Troy 72, Rancho Alamitos 58--Center Matt Cruthers had 17 points and forward Mike Hanna added 15 to lead the Warriors (1-0). Hanna and Cruthers each had nine points in the fourth quarter, salvaging the game for Troy.

After trailing by seven at halftime, Rancho Alamitos took a 48-45 after three quarters. But in the fourth quarter, the Warriors committed eight turnovers and scored just six points. Forward Tim Pavoec led the Vaqueros with 14 points and guard Eddy Riviera added 13. Troy faces El Modena today in the second round at Valencia.

Sonora 59, Esperanza 54--Sonora made eight of nine free throws in the fourth quarter, including two shots in the last 30 seconds by Scott St. Clair, to clinch the victory, Grayle Humphrey led the Raiders with 19 points. Sonora faces Westminster in the second round tonight at 8 at Valencia.

In nonleague action:

Santa Ana 66, Orange Lutheran 42--Five Santa Ana players scored in double figures in the nonleague game at Santa Ana. Guard Mike Zamora led the Saints with 16 points, forward Scootie Lynwood added 15 and Willie Lane, who led the team in rebounds with 10, scored 13. Geoff McArthur led Orange Lutheran with 13 points.

Long Beach Poly 59, Edison 58--Though the Chargers kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter, allowing Long Beach Poly only seven points, they fell short in the game at Edison. Long Beach Poly committed 25 turnovers and Edison 22. Forward Chip Hanlon led the Chargers with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Terry Nelson led Long Beach Poly with 14 points.
