The NCAA Proposes a New, More Limited Drug-Testing Plan

The National Collegiate Athletic Assn. is proposing to limit its drug tests slightly for Stanford’s football and basketball teams, but attorneys for the university and students fighting the tests said Tuesday that the new plan fails to meet court guidelines.

The NCAA, which was barred from testing Stanford athletes in 26 sports and ordered to present a plan for limited testing in football and basketball, offered to stop testing only for “related compounds” to more than 3,000 banned drugs.

The proposal, filed with Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Conrad Rushing for a hearing on Friday, does not specify which drugs would be dropped from the testing program.

Rushing ruled on Nov. 19 that the NCAA’s drug tests were too broad and invaded students’ privacy without evidence of a “compelling need” for the program.

The judge said he would allow limited tests to continue in basketball and football because there was some evidence of steroid and cocaine use in those sports.
