College Basketball Roundup : Freshman Miller Shoots Pittsburgh to Victory

Freshman Sean Miller came off the bench to hit 6 of 6 three-point shots and score 20 points while leading fourth-ranked Pittsburgh to an 88-70 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) Wednesday night at Pittsburgh.

Charles Smith scored 19 points, and Jerome Lane, last year’s NCAA rebound champion, had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Panthers (2-0).

Miller also had 7 assists for Pitt, which led, 36-34, at halftime.

St. Francis (1-1) was led by John Hilvert with 22 points and Joe Anderson with 19.

Michigan 92, Bowling Green 71--Gary Grant scored 26 points and Glen Rice added 19 for the No. 15 Wolverines, who quickly took control with a 15-0 run that gave them a 23-10 lead in the first half at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Freshman Sean Higgins, from Fairfax High School, had 12 points for the Wolverines (3-1).

Bowling Green (1-1) was led by Steve Martenet with 19 points.

Toledo 83, Minnesota 75--Jeff Haar made all 13 of his free throws and scored 19 points as the Rockets (2-0) overcame a 35-20 first half deficit to beat the Gophers (1-2) at Minneapolis.

Toledo made 37 of 43 free throws. The Rockets scored their last 15 points of the game from the line.

Richard Coffey led Minnesota with 16 points.

North Carolina State 85, Tampa 60--Chucky Brown scored 19 points and Vinny Del Negro added 18 for the Wolfpack against the Division II Spartans at Raleigh, N.C.

Charles Shackleford had 16 points for the Wolfpack (2-0), while Nate Johnson had a game-high 23 points for the Spartans (2-1).

Nebraska 92, Texas A&M; 60--Derrick Vick and Rich King each scored 15 points as the Cornhuskers (2-2) sprinted to a 17-point halftime lead and breezed home against the Aggies (1-2) at Lincoln, Neb.

King, 7-foot 2-inch freshman center, made his presence known early, blocking a pair of shots and slamming home two dunks in the first half.

Donald Thompson had 17 points for the Aggies.

Utah 86, Providence 62--Gale Gondrezick scored 18 points and Watkins Singletary and Mitch Smith added 16 each for the Utes (3-0), who broke it open with an 18-5 run after taking a 44-37 halftime lead at Salt Lake City.

Providence, a Final Four team last season, shot only 35% for the game, 27% in the second half.

Steve Wright led the Friars with 15 points. Leading scorer Delray Brooks hit only 1 of 12 shots.

Wyoming 100, Colorado 68--Fennis Dembo scored 19 points and Robyn Davis added 16 for the Cowboys, who shot 80% to only 30% for the Buffaloes in the first half as they took a 51-24 halftime lead at Boulder, Colo.

Eric Leckner got into early foul trouble and scored only five points for Wyoming (2-0).

Scott Wilke had a game-high 25 points for Colorado (1-2).

Washington 73, Portland 63--Sophomore guard Eldridge Recasner hit 10 of 12 shots and scored 24 points for the Huskies, who led, 49-27, with 14:47 to play at Portland, Ore.

Recasner also had 5 rebounds and 4 steals, and Mark West had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (1-2).
