BOYS BASKETBALL

Royal 69, Birmingham 38--Tony Strickland scored 21 points as Royal romped in the consolation bracket of the Simi Valley Tournament. A 6-4 forward, Strickland scored 11 points in the first half. Guard J. P. Oullette added 11 points for the Highlanders.

Greg Maxwell led Birmingham (0-2) with 14 points. Royal (1-1) plays Alemany at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the consolation final.

Crespi 54, South Bakersfield 23--Ken Lynch made 7 of 7 field-goal attempts for a game-high 15 points as he led Crespi (1-0) in the first round of the San Luis Obispo Tournament.

Lynch also had nine rebounds. John Davis turned his right ankle in the third quarter and left the game with five points and eight rebounds. He might miss the rest of the tournament.

Newbury Park 73, Agoura 59--Jeff Berman scored 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting to pace Newbury Park in the first round of the Nordhoff Tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Burbank 65, Crescenta Valley 25--Point guard Jennifer Gomez scored 23 points and had seven steals to lead the Bulldogs to a nonleague victory. Gomez, a 5-2 senior, hit 10 of 15 shots and 3 of 7 free-throw attempts.

Alemany 69, Quartz Hill 16--Carol Schoenmann scored a game-high 26 points to lead Alemany (1-1) in the first round of the Antelope Valley Tournament.

BOYS SOCCER

Monroe 5, Birmingham 0--Senior Greg Hartsock scored three goals to lead the Vikings into first place in the Mid-Valley League.

Van Nuys 1, San Fernando 1--The Tigers dropped out of first place in the Mid-Valley League when Van Nuys’ Leobardo Ayala scored the tying goal.

San Fernando is 5-2-1 in league play and Van Nuys is 2-1-5.

Taft 2, Reseda 0--Goalie Shervin Rahim shut out the West Valley League’s first place team.

Chatsworth 1, El Camino Real 1--Chatsworth earned the tie on Joey Bird’s goal midway through the first half.

Cleveland 4, Canoga Park 0--Hugo Acosta scored his first two goals of the season for Cleveland.

Poly 2, Verdugo Hills 0--Juan Carlos had a goal and an assist. Goalies Luis Elliot and Jose Gutierrez combined on the shutout.

Kennedy 0, Granada Hills 0--Kennedy dropped into a second-place tie in the Mid-Valley League.

North Hollywood 3, Grant 0--Brothers Julio and Jose Umana each scored a goal and goalies Samantha Tweddell and Jason Gunn combined on the shutout.

Agoura 3, Oak Park 0--Josh Mesirow, Dominic Zapata and Bill Murphy scored for Agoura (1-0).

Harvard 3, Flintridge Prep 0--Marty Holly scored two goals and Billy Glass had one.
