Winter Sports Highlights : COLLEGE MEN

Valley 86, Cerro Coso 66--Steve Ward scored a game-high 30 points and Orel Elrington had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the semifinal consolation round of the Antelope Valley Tournament.

Valley (2-5), which has won two consecutive games, plays College of Sequoias in the consolation championship today at 9 a.m.

Ward, a freshman from Calabasas High, connected on 13 of 19 field-goal attempts. He played only eight minutes of the second half.

Rio Hondo 67, Moorpark 66--Tim Garner sank a three-pointer with 28 seconds left to clinch Rio Hondo’s victory in the semifinals of the Moorpark-Camarillo Kiwanis Tournament. Tom Neumayr scored a game-high 24 points for Moorpark (4-3).

Ventura defeated West Los Angeles, 74-49, to advance to today’s championship game against Rio Hondo.

Cal State L.A. 68, Cal Lutheran 66--Howard Loughridge sank a jumper in the final two seconds to lead Cal State L. A. to the victory in the first round game of the San Luis Obispo Tip-Off Classic. Steve deLaveaga led CLU (0-5) with 19 points and Darren Ranck added 17.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Taft 73, North Hollywood 54--For the second time in two games, Taft (2-0) was led in scoring by guard Quincy Watts. Watts, who made 13 of 14 shots from the field in Taft’s season opener, made 11 of 18 shots and scored a game-high 23 points in a nonleague game at Taft.

Watts, an all-Valley League center as a sophomore and the No. 1-ranked high school sprinter in the nation as a junior, sat out his junior year from basketball because of a broken bone in his left foot. In two starts this season, however, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 197-pound senior is shooting 75% from the field and averaging 25 points per game.

Tony Moten finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Taft, ranked No. 3 in the Valley by The Times. North Hollywood, ranked No. 4, played without All-City forward Dominic Nappi, who was sidelined because of an injured ankle.

Taft jumped to a 28-10 lead, and led, 38-22, at halftime. North Hollywood (1-1) cut the lead to 14 in the second half, but Taft held on for the win. Dedan Thomas had eight points and nine assists for Taft.

Van Nuys 63, San Fernando 55--Alonzo Galloway scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half, and teammates Jimmy Chriss and Rashe Dorsey picked up the slack in the second half. Chriss had 10 of his game-high 19 and Dorsey 13 of his 18 points in second half. Dorsey added 13 rebounds and Galloway had seven assists.

In the fourth quarter, Van Nuys (2-0) made 8 of 11 free-throw attempts to hold off a late San Fernando (0-1) rally.

Granada Hills 70, Jefferson 60--John Johnson scored a game-high 23 points and Alvin Brown had 12 points and 19 rebounds to lift Granada Hills (1-1) to a nonleague victory at home.

Johnson had 11 points in the third quarter as Granada Hills took a 54-42 lead.

Grant 91, Canoga Park 51--Nate Conner scored 28 points and Troy McLeod added 15 and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Grant (2-0) to a nonleague home victory over Canoga Park (0-2).

Santa Maria 73, Canyon 46--Earnest Kelley scored 15 points for Canyon (0-1) in its season opener. Kennedy Clark and Mike Krause each had 19 points for Santa Maria (2-0).

Burroughs 49, Eagle Rock 46--Sophomore Eddie Hill scored 20 points as Burroughs won the consolation championship in the Burbank-Hoover Tournament. Marcelino Casal scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds, and Dan Murphy added 10 points for Burroughs (3-1).

Oakwood 60, Buckley 55--Mitchell Butler scored a game-high 30 points to lead Oakwood in the championship game of the Buckley Tournament. The Oakwood (3-0) victory ended a string of seven consecutive tournament championships for Buckley (2-1).

L.A. Baptist 52, Harvard 41--Senior Mike Wise scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half to lead L. A. Baptist (1-0) in a nonleague game. Brett Craig added 10 points for L. A. Baptist.

Foothill 69, Bell-Jeff 62--Forwards Archie Wright and Arthur Charles both scored 22 points to lead Foothill (2-0) to a berth in the championship game of the Morro Bay Tournament. Bell-Jeff forward Greg Dunn led all scorers with 23 points.

Calabasas 69, El Camino Real 58--Sean Obusek scored 28 points and Jon Drezner added 18 and pulled down nine rebounds for Calabasas in the nonleague game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Alemany 61, Bakersfield 32--Senior Nikki Davis scored 20 points to lead Alemany in the semifinals of the Antelope Valley Tournament. Junior Andrea Hoffman scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds for Alemany (2-1).

Cleveland 56, Palisades 46--Dawn Stewart scored 18 points to lead Cleveland in the nonleague game. Stacie Gaines and Necole Johnson each had 11 rebounds for Cleveland (3-1).

Louisville 43, Chino 27--Becky Long scored a game-high 18 points and had 5 assists and 5 steals in the consolation semifinal of the San Gabriel Tournament.
