High School Basketball Highlights : Furious Notre Dame Rally Comes Up Short, 79-70

Notre Dame battled back from a 27-point deficit against Glendale, pulling to within four points with two minutes to play. But the rally fell short as the Knights lost the nonleague game, 79-70, on Tuesday night at Notre Dame.

Junior forward Brian Jones, who scored a team-high 24 points, led Notre Dame’s comeback with 22 points in the second half.

“He was going nuts,” said Notre Dame Coach Mickey Cady, whose team dropped to 0-3. “But we ran out of gas.” Notre Dame’s Bruce Heicke, who finished with 20 points, scored 15 in the second half.

Glendale (2-0) took a 47-22 halftime lead behind the shooting of Jeff Sofro. Sofro, who finished with a game-high 25 points, sank three three-point shots and scored 15 points in the first half.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Chaminade 65, Canoga Park 54--Junior forward Chris Bruckner scored six points in the fourth quarter to propel Chaminade past Canoga Park in a nonleague game at Canoga Park.

Bruckner, who had a game-high 23 points, made 4 of 4 free throws in the fourth quarter, which began with Chaminade leading, 50-48. Chaminade (3-1) made 7 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter.

John Carolan added 19 points and Pete Miller had 10 for Chaminade. Chaminade won despite 24 turnovers. “It was an incredibly sloppy game,” Chaminade Coach Mike Lynn said. Canoga Park dropped to 0-3.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

El Camino 56, Simi Valley 45--Kerrie Marshall scored 21 points to lead El Camino Real (2-1) to a nonleague win at Simi Valley. Melissa Guidi added 14 points for El Camino Real, which led the entire game. Simi Valley was led by Sandy Nothvogel with 13 points and seven rebounds. Keria Irwin had nine points.

Thousand Oaks 72, Marymount 17--Thousand Oaks (3-0) scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters to take a 40-10 halftime lead. Barbara Tanner led Thousand Oaks with 25 points and Lina Mascarenas added 18 in the first-round game at the Beverly Hills tournament. Cindy Wiley had 14 points for Thousand Oaks.
