College Basketball Roundup : Virginia Tech Upsets No. 14 Georgetown, 87-82

For a team supposedly in turmoil, Virginia Tech certainly didn’t seem confused.

The Hokies, playing under interim coach Frankie Allen for a little over a month, upset 14th-ranked Georgetown, 87-82, Wednesday night at Hampton, Va.

“With all the adversity we’ve had, this team has hung together,” said Allen, who replaced Charles Moir as coach on Oct. 2 following an NCAA investigation into academic violations.

Georgetown Coach John Thompson’s advice to Allen was to negotiate a contract right now.

“If there is a way to be a holdout coach, then Frankie ought to be it,” Thompson said.

Georgetown’s Perry McDonald, who scored 18 points, made an uncontested layup with 2:49 left to tie the game, 79-79.

Wally Lancaster, who scored 30 points, gave the Hokies (4-1) the lead for good with a basket at 1:59. Georgetown (3-1) pulled within 83-82 on Jaren Jackson’s three-pointer with 14 seconds left, but Lancaster and Vernell Coles, who had 25 points, each made two free throws to sew up the victory.

Duke 105, Davidson 71--Alaa Abdelnaby hit 13 of 14 free throws and scored 19 points to lead the 10th-ranked Blue Devils past the Wildcats at Charlotte, N.C.

The Blue Devils rolled to a 54-24 halftime lead by limiting the Wildcats to 28% shooting and forcing 17 turnovers.

Kevin Strickland and John Smith added 18 points apiece for Duke (4-0). Maurice Gray scored 17 points for Davidson (2-2).

St. John’s 76, Fordham 71--Mike Porter followed his free throw with a layup off a steal in the second overtime, and the Redmen outlasted the Rams in their 68th meeting at New York.

St. John’s (4-1), which has won 18 straight to lead the series, 49-19, broke away from a 66-66 tie on Porter’s free throw with 2:32 left. Porter, who had 17 points, stole the ball from Fordham’s Joe Paterno near midcourt and gave the Redmen a three-point lead.

Paterno, who led Fordham (3-3) with 21 points, hit a jumper with 1:54 left, but St. John’s went on a 7-0 run to put the game away.

DePaul 94, Western Michigan 64--Rod Strickland scored 21 points and Kevin Edwards added 16 as the Blue Demons downed the Broncos at Rosemont, Ill.

Strickland was making his first appearance of the season after sitting out three games because of academic difficulties.

Eli Parker scored 19 points for Western Michigan (2-3), while Terence Greene added 14 points for DePaul (3-1).

South Carolina 73, Alabama 67--Freshman guard Brent Price came off the bench to score 19 points on his 19th birthday, and the Gamecocks turned back the Crimson Tide at Columbia, S.C.

It was the first victory by the Gamecocks (5-0) over Alabama in eight tries since 1971-72.

Michael Ansley had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Alabama (4-1).

Virginia 69, Dayton 50--John Johnson and freshman John Crotty scored 16 points each as the Cavaliers scored the 1,000th victory in their history by beating the Flyers at Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers (4-1) also gave Coach Terry Holland his 275th victory in 14 seasons at Virginia.

Neale Knight scored 12 points for Dayton (3-1).
