SportsScope : Third-Seeded Bruin Women Spikers Challenge BYU in Drive Toward Regional Title

The UCLA women’s volleyball team, 28-9, which defeated Cal in four games last week in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, will play Brigham Young (33-4) Friday night in the semifinals of the NCAA West Regional at Stanford.

UCLA, seeded third in the regional, and second-seeded BYU split two matches this season, each winning on its home court.

In Friday’s other semifinal, top-seeded Stanford will meet fourth-seeded Colorado State. The championship game is on Saturday night at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion. The NCAA finals are on Dec. 17 and 19 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis.

Against the Bears, UCLA’s Lori Zeno had 27 kills and 23 digs.

The UCLA women’s basketball team will play host to defending NCAA champion Tennessee, ranked first nationally by the Associated Press, at 6 p.m. Sunday at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA (2-2) was swamped by No. 4 Cal State Long Beach, 103-57, last week. Bruin senior Dora Dome led her team with 19 points and nine rebounds. Tennessee’s top player is Tonya Edwards, a 5-10 sophomore guard who was the most valuable player of last year’s NCAA Tournament finals. The Vols were 3-0 as the week began.

After the game, UCLA assistant coach Jackie Joyner-Kersee, world record holder in the heptathlon in track and field, will be among Bruin players and coaches who will sign autographs. Complimentary tickets for young people and organizations may be obtained by calling 206-6744.

The Bruins will play host to No. 3 Auburn (4-0) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at John Wooden Center. Vickie Orr, the Tigers’ 6-3 junior center, was a Kodak All-American last season.

The Pepperdine women’s basketball team will play host for the first Zuma Jay’s-Lady Waves tournament that starts Friday at Firestone Fieldhouse.

In Friday’s opener, Kent State (2-2) will play Oklahoma State (4-1) at 7 p.m. and Pepperdine (1-0) will meet Oregon (2-1) at 9:15. On Saturday, the consolation game starts at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 8:15.

Kent State is paced by 6-3 Mary Bukovac, averaging 18.8 points and 13.5 rebounds a game, Oklahoma State by 5-11 Clinette Jordan (20.4 points, 8.6 rebounds) and Oregon by 6-7 Stephanie Kasperski (13.7 points, 9 rebounds) and 5-10 Jacquie Semeniuk (14 points).

The Waves opened the season last week with a 93-57 win over UC Santa Barbara. Six Pepperdine players scored in double figures. Earnesta Grace and Stephanie Meneze each scored 14 points, Shannon Boyd and Sharon Clark each 12 and Kristy Greenberg and Dionne Burgess each 10.

The Pepperdine women’s swim team, 2-1 after losing to Cal State Long Beach, 142-99, will be idle until Jan. 2 when the Waves play host to Oregon State.

Pepperdine junior diver Bridget Kenehan remained unbeaten this season with victories in the one- and three-meter events against Long Beach. Backstroker Jerryl Reed was the other double winner for the Waves, taking the 100 in 1:07.51 and the 200 in 2:20.04.
