Boys’ Basketball Tournament Roundup : Bach, Wilber Lead Fullerton Over La Mirada

Pete Bach had 18 points and Greg Wilber 16 to lead Fullerton High School to a 65-38 victory over La Mirada in the opening round of the Fullerton Tournament Wednesday night at Fullerton.

Fullerton was playing without two starters--center Alan Lewis, who had a sprained ankle, and point guard David Sawyer, who had strep throat.

The Indians (4-2) held La Mirada to only four points in the second quarter and led at halftime, 29-20. Fullerton pushed the lead to 45-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Fullerton faces Cerritos in one semifinal game tonight at 7:30.

In another Fullerton Tournament game:

Cerritos 53, Garden Grove 51--Ronnie Rhines had a game-high 17 points and Isidro Maldonado added 12 for Garden Grove, but it wasn’t enough for the Argonauts.

Garden Grove held a 12-6 lead at halftime, but Cerritos outscored Garden Grove, 23-13, in the second quarter to lead at halftime, 29-25.

In the El Dorado Tournament:

El Dorado 91, Palm Desert 55--Mike Brooks had 18 points to lead the Golden Hawks, who had three other players score in double figures. Chris Facione had 16, Mike Renaud 15 and Matt Luke 11 for El Dorado (2-3). The Golden Hawks led, 44-28, at halftime.

El Dorado plays Long Beach Jordan in one semifinal at 8 p.m. Friday. The championship is Saturday at 8 p.m.

Long Beach Jordan 60, Troy 56--Tyron Julks scored 12 points to lead Jordan to a first-round victory. Tim Morris scored 14, Jeff Holland 12 and Mike Hanna 10 for Troy, which plays Palm Desert today at 5 p.m. in one consolation semifinal.

In the Tournament of Champions:

Long Beach Poly 72, Ocean View 71--Ocean View led, 37-32, at the half but was outscored, 20-5, in the third quarter and was eliminated. Ryan Martin’s three-point shot with one second left cut the lead to one for Ocean View.

Russell Edney scored 19 points and Derrick Knowles 14 for Poly. Craig Rice scored 18 and Greg Evans 14 for Ocean View (3-4).

In the Glendora Tournament:

Gahr 82, Brea-Olinda 68--Keith Walker scored 35 points and had 9 rebounds for Brea, but it wasn’t enough as Gahr advanced to the semifinals.

Brea (3-3) plays Arlington in the fifth-place semifinal round at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Ed Martinez had 29 points to lead Gahr, which got off to a quick, 24-15, first-quarter score.
