Cameron Wins NAIA Title by Beating Carson-Newman

Charles Smith ran for two touchdowns and was named the game’s most valuable offensive player Saturday as Cameron defeated Carson-Newman, 30-2, to win the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I football championship at Cameron.

The Aggie defense held Carson-Newman’s high-powered offense to 172 yards and took advanatge of numerous Eagle mistakes to win the team’s first national title. It marked the first time in NAIA history that the same teams had played for the national title in consecutive years. The Eagles defeated Cameron, 17-0, last year.

Cameron, No. 7 in the final NAIA Division I poll, finished the season with an 11-2 record. The Aggies beat Emporia, Kan.; Central Arkansas, and Pittsburg State, Kan., in the playoffs.

No. 9 Carson-Newman (10-4) defeated Central Ohio, Gardner-Webb and Mesa, Colo., to reach the title game.
