San Diego High School Basketball : Torrey Pines, El Camino Gain Mitchell Final

Torrey Pines High School won in a rout and El Camino needed overtime to advance to the final of the Lt. Mitchell Tournament at San Dieguito High School Monday night.

Torrey Pines defeated Vista, 69-42, as Courtie Miller scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds. Miller, who was 2 of 14 from the field, hit 16 of 19 free throws. Tom Underwood added 14 points for Torrey Pines (10-0).

Torrey Pines led, 42-31, after three quarters, but outscored Vista, 27-11, in the final period. Torrey Pines opened the fourth quarter by scoring 11 unanswered points. Art Simental led Vista (6-3) with 10 points.

Scott Oatsvall scored 6 of El Camino’s 10 overtime points to lead the Wildcats over Yuma, 73-70. Yuma tied the game at 63 in regulation on a 15-foot shot by Cliff Morrison with three seconds left. Lee Cobb led El Camino with 28 points.

In other Lt. Mitchell Tournament games:

Escondido 67, Orange Glen 57--Escondido took a 24-11 lead after the first quarter and held on for the victory. Tim Bone scored 18 points and Paul Baldwin added 16 for Escondido. Shawn Macklin had 21 points and Bill McNeel added 17 for Orange Glen.

Ramona 51, Central (El Centro) 47--Ramona held Central to four points in the first quarter and led 22-12 at the half. Central rallied in the second half but could not catch Ramona. Chad Nelson scored 17 points and Jason McClanahan added 13 for Ramona. Central was led by Ralph Bellamy’s 18 points.

Las Vegas 74, Oceanside 44--Eric White and Marcus Jenkins scored 21 points apiece as Las Vegas routed Oceanside. Las Vegas led 20-9 after the first quarter. Oceanside trailed 51-37 after three quarters, but Las Vegas outscored the Pirates, 23-7, in the final period. Donald Barnert had 15 points for Oceanside.

Newport Harbor 49, San Dieguito 43--San Dieguito led, 37-34, going into the fourth quarter, but Newport Harbor held the Mustangs to 6 points to pull out the victory. Jeff Zevely and Mike McCune led San Dieguito with 11 points apiece.

Unlimited Division (At Hoover High)

Mount Miguel 41, Patrick Henry 39--Anthony Rivera scored 12 of Mount Miguel’s 15 fourth-quarter points to lead Mount Miguel (4-4). Patrick Henry (3-1) led, 31-26, entering the fourth quarter. Rivera led Mount Miguel with 13 points and Robert Griffith had 11. Terrence Hamilton led Henry with 17 points.

Serra 43, Helix 41--Keith Ladue made a free throw with three seconds remaining to give Serra the victory. Helix led, 19-11, after the first quarter but was held to five points in the second quarter and led 24-21 at the half. Chris Ireland scored 11 points and Conrad Jones added 10 to lead Serra (3-2). Chris Carlson scored 11 points and John Pressler had 10 for Helix.

Poway 82, Monte Vista 52--Poway rebounded from its loss to Lincoln with the rout. Scott Winne scored 25 points in his first game in two weeks for Monte Vista. Adam Jones scored 24 points and Gabby Awbray had 19 for Poway (4-1), which led 39-26 at the half.

Point Loma 44, Chula Vista 41--Jeff Johnson scored 11 points to lead Point Loma. Trailing, 42-41, with 20 seconds remaining, Chula Vista missed a shot inside. Scott Matney scored 16 points on 7 of 10 shooting to lead Chula Vista.

Riverside Bloomington 71, Castle Park 66--Eric Gray scored 26 points and Willie Tucker added 17 points to lead Bloomington.
