Blue-Gray All-Star Football Game : Pro Scouts to Watch Lockbaum, Perez

Gordie Lockbaum, the two-way player from Holy Cross, will display his versatility for pro scouts today in the Blue-Gray All-Star game.

Lockbaum, who finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting despite playing for an NCAA Division I-AA school, and San Jose State quarterback Mike Perez, one of the nation’s top passers, head the Blue team.

The Gray team has Duke quarterback Steve Slayden, who finished fourth in the nation in total offense, and Kentucky’s 5-foot 7-inch running back Mark Higgs, who became only the fourth Wildcat to rush for 1,000 yards.

The game, which will be televised by ABC, will start at 9 a.m. (PST).

Lockbaum, who rushed for more than 400 yards this season and caught passes for 1,100 more, is expected to play wide receiver, running back and defensive back.

Perez passed for 3,213 yards, an average of 292 per game. He completed 59% of his passes and 22 touchdowns.

Colgate’s Kenny Gamble, who was the second-leading rusher in Division I-AA with 1,411 yards, will lead the Blue running game.

The Gray offense will feature Slayden, who will have several speedy targets, including Maryland’s Abdur-Ra’oof and Central Florida’s Bernard Ford.
