THE PREPS : Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Mater Dei Takes It to Atlantic City, 63-50 : Rigdon’s 21 Points Lead Monarchs to Beach Ball Tournament Victory

Dylan Rigdon hit one of his four three-pointers to give the Mater Dei High School boys’ basketball team a 3-2 lead, and the Monarchs went on to defeat Atlantic City, 63-50, in the Beach Ball tournament Saturday night before a standing-room-only crowd of 1,500 at Holy Spirit High School in Atlantic City, N.J.

Rigdon scored 21 points to lead the Monarchs, whose biggest lead was 16 at 45-29. Atlantic City (3-1) went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to nine (45-36) before Char Ruppel hit a 17-footer.

Ruppel finished with 11 points for Mater Dei (9-2). Mike Hopkins added 12, Mark Ramstack 10 and Kevin Rembert 9.

The Monarchs play Tolentine High of New York Monday night at Holy Spirit.

On the way back to the floor at halftime, both teams were stopped by police and told to return to the locker rooms. They waited 20 minutes for police to arrive and break up an apparently gang-related brawl involving 30 people in the gymnasium.

“It was just bedlam, it was wild,” said Phil Bellomo, Mater Dei assistant coach. “We were sent back to the locker rooms and had to sit tight.”

In the Coast Christmas tournament:

Cypress 78, Laguna Hills 72--Forward Bond Weaver scored 25 points to lead the Chargers to a first-round upset of the No. 3-seeded Hawks at Estancia high.

Cypress took control in the first quarter, outscoring Laguna Hills, 20-10. Guard Greg Bedford added 18 for Cypress, which plays Mission Viejo at 8:40 p.m. Monday in one quarterfinal.

Chris Sheff scored 25 points and Kyle Roberts 15 for Laguna Hills, which plays Hoover in the consolation round at 10:40 a.m. Monday.

Mission Viejo 79, Hoover 55--Senior forward Jeff Springfield scored 16 points for Mission Viejo in the first round. Tom Tkach scored 14 and Lance Elmore and Eric Forbes 11 each for Mission Viejo.

Edgewood 66, Costa Mesa 65--Costa Mesa missed a chance to upset Edgewood, the top-seeded team, when Paul Kos missed two free throws with two seconds left. Kos, who finished with 10 points, was fouled driving for a shot in the lane.

Greg Ertel scored 17 points and Tuan Vu 12 for Costa Mesa, which plays Dana Hills at 9 a.m. Monday in the consolation quarterfinals.

Edgewood plays Long Beach Jordan in one quarterfinal at 3:40 p.m. Monday.

Long Beach Jordan 77, Dana Hills 54--Jordan opened at 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and ran away from Dana Hills. Tyrone Mexisell scored a game-high 28 for Dana Hills.

Los Alamitos 82, Huntington Beach 70--Dre Lamoureux scored a game-high 32 points to lead Los Alamitos (6-5). Tony Ware added 16 points and Brett Pagett 14.

Los Alamitos plays Corona del Mar at 7 p.m. in the second round. Jeff Long scored 20 points for Huntington Beach (3-7). The Oilers play Sonora in the consolation bracket at 12:20 Monday.

Corona del Mar 50, Sonora 33--Guard Geoff Probst scored 16 points for Corona del Mar. Brian Spratt added 14 and Matt Herrington 11.

Gene Metzger was the only Sonora player in double figures, scoring 11.

Irvine 64, Warren 52--Irvine had only five players score, but four were in double figures. Bryan Allred had 22 points and Dave Ballantyne 21 for Irvine (5-5). Warren had nine players score, but only Damian Fernandez (13) and Ray Winick (12) in double figures. Irvine will play Edison Monday at 5:20 p.m.. Warren plays Estancia at 2.

Edison 50, Estancia 41--Chip Hanlon scored 16 points and Chris Lippincott 15 for Edison. Mike Curtis had 22 for Estancia.

In the Canyon tournament:

Trabuco Hills 80, Pomona 71--Guard Teddy Colburn had a game-high 29 points for the Mustangs in their first-round game. John Barnes scored 24 points for Trabuco Hills to offset 23-point performances by Pomona’s Ny Bradford and Mike Victor.

Trabuco Hills trailed by three, 21-18, at the end of the first quarter but outscored Pomona, 28-20, in the second.

Trabuco Hills advances to play Lynwood in the second round at 3 Monday.

Carson 74, Magnolia 55--Mike Goff scored 36 points, hitting 13 of 19 from the field for Magnolia, but it wasn’t enough. Stephen Smith had 18 points for Carson.

Magnolia plays in the consolation round against Pomona at 9:45 a.m. Monday.

Lynwood 66, Los Amigos 39--Lynwood broke the game open with a 21-point third quarter to take a 48-25 lead. Louis Williams led all scorers with 17 points.

Villa Park plays Lynwood in the second-round game Monday at 4:45 p.m.

Los Amigos’ Carlos Palomino scored 13 and John Jenkins 12. The Lobos play Anaheim in the consolation round Monday at 8 a.m.

Villa Park 43, Anaheim 41--Roger Branstine scored 24 points to lead the Spartans to a come-from-behind victory. Villa Park trailed, 34-31, after three quarters.

Anaheim was led by Matt Bois, who scored 10 points.

S.F. McAteer 57, Newport Harbor 40--Wilson Stephens scored 17 points and Jody Daggs 11 to lead McAteer to the second-round victory. Newport Harbor trailed, 34-33, after three quarters. But McAteer outscored the Sailors (7-4) in the fourth quarter, 23-7. Mike Nguyen with 12 points was the only Newport Harbor player to score in double figures.

In the Katella tournament:

Servite 82, Bell 74--Guard Brian Kenney and center Nick Marusich each score 21 points to lead the Friars to the first-round victory. Bell was led by Luis Silva, who scored a game-high 27 points. The teams combined for 58 points in the fourth quarter.
